Evan Pinchot - The Penn State Beaver softball team hosted the women of Penn State Greater Allegheny for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternon, in which Beaver was able to steal one win in their two game series.
Game one was a quiet one for Beaver's bats, as the story in this one would be the lack of an offensive showing from Beaver. Tallying 5 hits through 7 innings, with only one extra base hit, Beaver started out this doubleheader series with their bats as cold as could be. It didn't help Beaver's cause that their pitching seemed to struggle throughout this one as well, as Beaver would let up 10 hits to Greater Allegheny before it was all said and done. The shining light for Beaver in this game would be a seventh inning home run by none other than Sophomore Cassadie Speed (Cranbury, Nj / North Brunswick Township), who leads the Beaver team this year with 5 home runs. However, one run would not be enough for Beaver to get back into this game, as they would end up losing this game by a final score of 6-1.
After a poor all-around performance in game one of the day's two game series, Beaver would come out much sharper for game two against Greater Allegheny. In what would be their closest game of the season yet, Beaver would be carried in this one by a stellar performance on the mound by Senior Natalie Larkin (Center, Pa Central Valley) and her 6 hit, complete game shoutout of Greater Allegheny. With dominant pitching on the mound for Beaver, it would only take a lone run, coming from a sac fly by Junior Skylar Duffee (New Castle, Pa New Castle) in the fourth inning, to give Beaver the 1-0 win in game two of the day.
Sharpening up after their game one loss, Beaver found themselves splitting this two game series with Greater Allegheny today, improving their record to 5-5 overall and in conference play. After pitching a 6 hit shutout in game two, Senior Natalie Larkin can be thanked as today's player of the series, as she helped carry Beaver to a win in game two to salvage what could have been a bad day for the lady lions.
The team will look to improve their record once again when they return to action this Friday, April 16, as Beaver will host the women of Penn State Mont Alto for a doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 2 pm, with game two to follow with a 4 pm start.
