BEAVER FALLS, Pa.—In the final game of the season, the Penn State Beaver women's soccer team pulled away with a 3-2 win against Mercyhurst Northeast University on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Field.
While the game went scoreless for the first 24 minutes, the Lady Lions controlling the tempo of the game and keeping Mercyhurst Northeast from attacking their side of the field. Then, at the 24th minute, freshman Iliyah Peterson (Houston /Ridge Point) fed the ball to freshman Veronica Andujar (Weston/American Heritage Boca/Delray), who connected for a goal (1-0). But the ladies of Mercyhurst Northeast answered back with a goal of their own three minutes later to tie it up at 1-1. But Beaver took the lead back with only five minutes left in the first period with Andujar drilling her second goal on a pass by junior Brianna Sanford (West Mifflin) to go up by one goal at the half (2-1).
In the second period, Mercyhurst Northeast tied it up once again at the 49-minute mark. The teams played excellent defense, keeping the period scoreless for 29 minutes. But just as the game clock almost expired, Andujar earned a hat trick at the 88th minute for Beaver to take a 3-2 victory for the day.
At the net, freshman Megan Bartley (Austintown/Austintown Fitch) had seven saves against the nine SOG she faced.
After today's win, Beaver finishes the 2019 season with a 4-7 overall record and ranked in fifth place (2-4) in the PSUAC conference standings.
