BEAVER FALLS, Pa.—The Penn State Beaver women's soccer team stretched its winning streak to two after defeating Potomac State College by one goal during Tuesday afternoon's home game.
The teams battled it out in midfield for the early minutes of the game until the Lady Lions finally made their way to Potomac State's penalty box around the eighth minute. Freshman Valentina Sandoval (Miami/John A. Ferguson) struck towards the left of the net but the shot was wide. The game stayed scoreless, but junior Brianna Sanford (West Mifflin) got the ball back into Potomac State's scoring zone and shot a corner kick but missed. But the Lady Lions quickly got back to their positions 42 seconds later, and freshman Ashley Jones (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) fed the ball to freshman Veronica Andujar (Weston/American Heritage Boca/Delray), who connected on the pass to score a goal for Beaver (1-0). Beaver ended the half up by one. The teams played each other tough defensively in the second half, with neither team allowing one goal by the other, giving Beaver a close 1-0 win for the day.
Andujar led the way for Beaver, where she scored one goal on seven shots and had five on goal. Jones recorded the assist on the goal. Freshman Megan Bartley (Austintown/Austintown Fitch), who goaltended for the entire game, had four saves against the four SOG she faced. Beaver outshot Potomac State 12-10 and 4-2 on corner kicks.
After today's win, Beaver improves to a 2-3 overall record and 1-1 in the PSUAC conference standings. The Lady Lions will be back at home Saturday, Sept. 28, where they will face off against PSUAC rival Penn State Hazleton. The game is slated for 2 p.m.
