Lady Lions Pass First Test In USCAA Title Defense
#5 Seeded Penn State Beaver defeated #4 seeded University of Maine Augusta 82-71 in the first round on the 2016 USCAA National Tournament.
Uniontown- The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions passed the first step in their quest to win back to back USCAA National Championships, defeating #4 seeded Maine Augusta 82-71.
The game featured a first quarter that had five lead changes, and five times the score was tied. The score was knotted at 17-17 after the first ten minutes. Beaver pulled away a bit in the second, building a 7 point half-time lead (36-29). Beaver started the third quarter with a 20-6 run, to build their game high lead of 21 (56-35) with three minutes left in the third. Facing a twenty point defecit, Maine did not quit. Maine cut the lead back to 13 in the final three minutes, bringing the score to 58-45. Beaver pushed the lead back to twenty in the forth, before seeing Maine put together another run, pulling within ten with two minutes left. From that point, Beaver stayed the course, winning by a final score of 82-71.
In the win, Beaver saw three players finish with double digits in scoring. Senior Khalia Adams (Washington D.C. / Phelps) finished with a game high 22 points. Sophomre Brittany Jackson (Turtle Creek, PA / Westinghouse) added 18 coming off the bench and Senior Morgan Kurtz (Washington, PA / Trinity) finished with 15. Adams and Jackson led in rebounding, grabbing 9, 7 respectively.
With the win, Beaver earned the right to face #1 seeded St Joe's (VT) on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 9PM at Penn State Fayette's Main Arena.
