Lady Lions Fall to USCAA DI, Carlow University
After leading at the half by 2, Lady Lions fall by a final score of 70-66.
Monaca, PA – Lady Lions take tough loss to Carlow to open the second half of their season at home.
After Carlow jumped out to an early lead, Beaver took their first lead of the game, 7-6, with about four minutes to play in the first quarter on a Khalia Adams (Washington, DC / Phelps) 3-pointer. From this point the lead would change hands three more times before the quarter came to a close with Beaver trailing by two (17-15).
To open the second quarter, Beaver regained the lead on a Morgan Kurtz (Washington, PA / Trinity) layup sparking a nine point run to give Beaver a seemingly comfortable cushion, 24-17 with a little over six minutes to play. Carlow would slowly edge their way back, cutting their deficit to 2 just before the half with the score 29-27 in favor of Beaver.
As Carlow quickly tied the game to open the second half, the teams would battle through the third quarter with neither team gaining more than a 7 point advantage on the other as the lead changed hands twice. Despite the efforts of Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) and her supporting cast in the quarter, Beaver was outscored 20-15 and went into the fourth quarter down by a score of 47-44.
In the final ten minutes of the game, Carlow saw their biggest lead of the evening, 12 points, at the 7:04 mark (56-44). Kurtz again sparked a run to bring Beaver within six with a little more than five minutes to play, but Carlow answered and increased their lead to 11 with under three minutes to play. In true Lady Lion fashion, Coach Moore's squad battled to get back within two in the closing minute on a Kurtz 3-pointer, but their late surge wasn't enough to hold off USCAA Division I Carlow. Beaver fell by a final score of 70-66 and dropped to 5-8 overall.
Leading the Lady Lions were Borders and Kurtz with 19 and 18 points respectively. Kurtz also tallied 8 total rebounds in the contest. Beaver will return to action on Saturday, January 16th as they host PSUAC foe, Penn State York for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
