Beaver Advances to 3-1 With Win Over Fayette
Lady Lions win 82-75
Monaca, PA -- Lady Lions advance to 3-1 in th3 PSUAC with a win over Penn State Fayette.
After falling behind 4-0 to start the game, Morgan Kurtz (Washington, PA / Trinity) hit a 3-pointer to spark the Beaver offense, igniting a 5 point run. Fayette quickly answered, eventually tying the game at 11 with 4:04 to play in the 1st quarter. Beaver struggled on both sides of the ball for the final minutes of the quarter, allowing Fayette to push their lead to 10 (21-11) before Khalia Adams (Washington, DC / Phelps) made two late shots to close the quater with Beaver down 25-16.
As play continued in the second quarter, Beaver slowly worked their way back into the game, cutting the Fayette lead to just one on an Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) layup (36-35) with under two minutes in the half. After a steal and tough layup, Kurtz made her free throw to tie the game at 38. With the momentum finally back on their side, the Lady Lions regained the lead, 39-38, with :58 to play and finished strong, taking a 3 point lead into half time, 43-40.
To open the second half, Beaver continued to play tough defense, holding Fayette to just 6 points through the first 6 minutes of the third quarter while they increased their lead to 17 at the 4:56 mark on a Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA / Shenango) layup and free throw. But just as they had in the first half, Fayette battled to cut their deficit to 10 at the end of the quarter (66-65).
The fourth quarter was action packed as Fayette came within 2 at the 4:10 mark (72-70). Beaver immediately responded to the pressure, playing a press defense to keep Fayette at bay while drawing five late foul shots to close the game and go on to win by a final score of 82-75.
Leading the Beaver offense was Kurtz with 19 points followed by Brittany Jackson (Turtle Creek, PA / Westinghouse). Borders also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, her first of the season.
Beaver now sits at 3-1 in the PSUAC and will wrap up the first half of the season with a road game at Penn State Greater Allegheny Friday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m.
