Myrtle Beach, SC - After weather delays on Monday and getting pushed back 3 hours today, the Softbal team finally got to take the field once again for the Spring Training Trip in Myrtle Beach! The team won their first game of the season today against University of Minnesota - Morris with a score of 4-2. The team then took on University of Pikeville, losing 9-1 after trying to dig their way back after a rough start to the game. Beaver had 11 hits on the day and only gave up 9 hits total. The team limited their errors compared to day 1 making only 3. The team played hard in both games and came together through all parts, this was an opportunity for the team to see where they need to be once conference play begins later this month.
Game 1 the team had multiple players had made huge impacts. Third-year, Selene Arteaga (Simi Valley, CA) had 2 hits, scored 1 run, and had a stolen base. Fourth-year, Maria Matts (Pittsburgh, PA) had 1 hit which was a triple, and 2 RBI's. First-year, Reza Benson (Sunbury, OH) had 2 hits and scored 1 run. Also tallying hits for Beaver was Second-year, Cassidy Crean (York, PA), Fourth-year, Mackenzie Boyd (Beaver, PA), Second-year, Kierstyn Mays (), and First-year Emilee Waggoner (Conway, PA). Beavers other two runs were scored by Fourth-year, Allison Vankirk (Pittsburgh, PA) and Second-year, Bailey Vavricek (North Las Vegas, NV). Starting and finishing on the mound this game was Mays. Throwing a complete 7 innings, Mays gave up 2 hits, 2 runs, only 1 being earned and striking out 5.
In game 2, the team got down quickly after University of Pikeville scored 4 in the first and 4 in the second, after that though the team was held until the bottom of the 5th. Both hits this game came from Benson and Matts. Waggoner had the teams only RBI which scored Benson in the top of the 5th. Starting on the mound for Beaver was Benson who threw 2 innings giving up 6 hits, and 8 runs, while only 2 of those were earned. In relief was Fourth-year, Gabbey Flynt (Fayetteville, TN) who threw the other 3 innings, giving up 1 hit and 1 run. The team battled but it wasn't enough to finished out the game. This game gave fight to the team for the remainder of Spring Training.
Penn State Beaver Softball is now 1-3 overall and will have 2 more games during Spring Training. The Baseball team take the field again on Thursday, March 13th at 9:00am and 1:00pm when they take on Cairn University and Bridgewater State.
