Evan Pinchot - The Penn State Beaver softball team played host to the women of Penn State Mont Alto for another doubleheader matchup, eventually splitting the two game series to remain .500 on the season.
Carrying over their matchup from the day before, Beaver traveled to Mont Alto on Saturday to finish out their season-long series with Penn State Mont Alto. These two teams have gone back and forth all year, and the two game matchup on Saturday was no different. Beaver would jump out to an early lead that they would refuse to give back in game one. With a lot of great performances at the plate, it was Sophomore Desiree Aponte's performance on the mound that would lead Beaver to victory in game one, as she would throw 7 innings while only allowing 4 hits and 1 run on a solo home run in the fourth inning. Beaver was dominant from the beginning in game one, and without much offense to speak of from Mont Alto, game one would go to Beaver in an impressive 6-1 victory.
Game two of the day's doubleheader was a different story for Beaver however, as Beaver's bats went silent from the start of this matchup. With Desiree Aponte starting this game for Beaver as well, Mont Alto was able to take advantage of Aponte by striking for 4 runs in the first 2 innings of this game. With their early lead, Beaver was unable to get any sort of life out of their bats while playing from behind. Carrying over her great day at the plate from game one, Junior Skylar Duffee (New Castle, Pa / New Castle) would be the only player for Beaver with a multi-hit performance in this game with her 2-4 day at the plate that included a double. All in all, Beaver was incapable of catching Mont Alto in game two, falling behind early and never being able to do anything about it, as they would lose the second game of the series by a final score of 5-2.
After splitting this series with Mont Alto, Beaver remains at .500 on the season with their 7-7 record. Looking to improve on this recrod, the team will take to the road on Monday, April 19, to take on the women of Penn State New Kensington for a doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 2 pm, while game two is set to follow at 5:20 pm.
