Evan Pinchot - The Penn State Beaver softball team faced off against the women of Penn State New Kensington this Wednesday, coming away with one win in their doubleheader.
In game one of their doubleheader, Beaver would start off the game hot, as Sophmore Cassadie Speed (Cranbury, Nj / North Brunswick Township) would come out strong as she has all year with a 2 run home run to put Beaver ahead early. However, Speed's home run would be the end of Beaver's offense in this game, as they would be shut out through the next 6 innings, tallying a total of 4 hits in this game. In the end, it would be New Kensington that walks away victorious in this game, winning by a final score of 7-2.
Game two was a different story for Beaver at the plate, as their bats would come alive for 8 hits in this game. With a strong performance by their starting pitcher, Sophomore Desiree Aponte (Irving, Tx Ranchview), Beaver was able to hold New Kensington to just 2 runs in game two. At the plate, Beaver would have a number of strong performances in this game as well, but it was Junior Skylar Duffee (New Castle, Pa / New Castle) who would outshined the rest as she would go 3-4 in this game with a home run, double, and 2 RBIs to show for her efforts. In the end, Beaver would be too much for New Kensington to handle in this game, as they would walk away with a 5-2 victory in game two.
After getting one win in their doubleheader today, Beaver now stands with a 4-4 overall and conference record. The girls will look to improve on their record this Sunday, Aprill 11, as the team will travel to take on Penn State Schuylkill for another doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 2 pm, with game two to follow at 4 pm.
