Evan Pinchot - The Penn State Beaver softball team took on the women of Penn State Mont Alto on Tuesday, splitting their series by taking home a win in game two.
In game one of the doubleheader between Mont Alto and Beaver, Beaver would end up taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a 2-run home run by Sophomore Cassadie Speed (Cranbury, Nj / North Brunswick Township). However, their bats would fall silent for the rest of the game, as Mont Alto would tack on runs in the third, fourth, and seventh inning, giving them a 7-2 lead by the end of the game. In the end, it would be the lack of offense, with only 4 hits in this game, as well as the 3 errors in the field that would cost Beaver game one of the series.
In game two, it would be a much more exciting game, as this one wouldn't be in hand for either team until the final out was recorded. Jumping out to an early 4-1 lead by the end of the second inning, Beaver looked to be in good shape to run away with a lead in this game. However, Mont Alto would continue to crawl back in this one, as their bats would continue to tack on run after run, eventually making it a 7-5 game going into the top of the seventh inning. After starting what looked like a game winning rally in the top of the seventh inning, Beaver was finally able to shut Mont Alto's dream of a comback down, as Sophomore Desiree Aponte (Irving, Tx / Ranchview) would end up finishing what she started on the mound by recording the final out in this one, giving Beaver the 7-6 win.
After splitting this series with Mont Alto, Beaver now sits at 3-3 overall with a 3-3 conference record. Beaver will look to keep the momentum from their game two win today going this Thursday on the road against Penn State Fayette for another doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 2 pm, with game two to follow at 4 pm.
