Beaver Softball Falls to Greater Allegheny in Their Home Opener
The Penn State Beaver Softball team opened up the season with a double-header against the women of Penn State Greater Allegheny, losing both games of the double-header.

The Penn State Beaver Softball team opened up their 2021 season with a double-header at home against the women of Penn State Greater Allegheny. After their year-long hiatus, the Beaver girls suffered their first two loses of the new season in what were two hard fought games.
In game one of the double-header, both Beaver and Greater Allegheny got off to a hot start, as the score sat at 2-2 by the time the first inning was over. After a quiet second inning, another loud inning in the third by both teams had Greater Allegheny ahead by a score of 6-5. From here on out, Greater Alleghney would hold the lead until the end of the game, taking home an 8-6 win and handing Beaver their first loss of the 2021 campaign. Even though Beaver struggled to secure the win in the first game of their season, they showed a lot of offensive spark, scoring 6 runs with the help of Sophomore Cassadie Speed (Cranbury, Nj / North Brunswick Township) and her 2 run home run that opened up the game for Beaver in the first inning.
In game two of the double-header, Beaver would be the ones to jump out to an early 1-0 in the first inning. After a quiet second inning, Greater Allegheny would explode for a big, 3 run inning, taking a lead that would turn out to be all they needed in this game. The rest of this game would turn out to be pretty quiet until, once again today, Cassadie Speed would hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, giving her two home runs and 4 rbis on the day. However, Speed's home run would not be enough to get the Beaver bats going again, as they would fall by a final score of 3-2.
In the end, Beaver would walk away from their opening double-header empty handed, suffering their first 2 loses of the season against Greater Alleghney. Even though the team now sits at 0-2 to start the year, Beaver was in it until the end in both games today. With a remarkable 2 homer performance by Cassadie Speed, Beaver seems poised to bounce back in their next game, which will have the team facing off against Greater Alleghney in a double-header once again. The first game will be held at Greater Allegheny on Saturday, March 27, at 1 pm, with the second game set to start at 3 pm.
