Myrtle Beach, SC -- Beaver Softball picks up a pair of wins on the morning of the final day in South Carolina.
In their first game, aganist Grand Rapics CC, Beaver started the game scoring three runs in the top of the first inning as Brittany Zahn, Onika Miles and Brenna Cepull all earned RBI's. They kept things rolling in the third inning as well.
Michelle Cisco opened the inning with a single and made her way to third on a Zahn double. Miles then stepped to the plate for a 2 RBI single to take the 5-0 lead. Cepull kept the hit traing rolling with a single of her own as Brittany Garza reached safely after being hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Taylor Johnson reached on a fielders choice, allowing two runs to score to increase their lead to seven. Tyler Johnson's pop out earned the final RBI of the inning, scoing her sister to give Beaver a very comfortble 8-0 lead after two and a half innings of play.
Holding Grand Rapids scoreless into the top of the fifth, Beaver added a security run to go on to win 9-0. Tyler Johnson, Vanessa Jackson and Brittany Zahn led the team in hits with two a piece. Onika Miles led in RBI's with three. Earning the win in the circle was Jackson who threw the first four innings giving up just two hits. She was relieved by Haley Velemerovich who gave up just one hit.
In their second contest of the morning, Beaver took on CCBC Catonsville looking to keep their winning ways.
To start the game, Beaver opened with a lead off single from Tyler Johnson who later stole second. She would eventually score on a Jessica Hughes single to give Beaver a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Lions kept things going in the second inning as Zahn and Peyton Mattson both made their way on to the basepaths allowing Zahn to score on a Taylor Johnson single to go up 2-0. But from here on out the game became a defensive battle. Neither team allowed a hit in the third or fourth innings and despite the Lady Lions giving up a hit in the bottom of the fifth, they still held CCBC scoreless. In the sixth and seventh, Beaver managed to get some base runners, but could not string enough hits together to increase their lead, but the defense was solid behind Hughes and they held on to win, 2-0.
Jessica Hughes dominated both sides of the ball, going 2 for 3 from the plate to lead the team as well as throwing a complete shut-out from the circle.
The Lady Lions advance to 3-2 on the young season and look to earn their fourth win of the week later tonight.
