Monaca, PA -- Beaver Goes 2-0 Against Kent State - Tuscarawas

The Beaver Lady Lions returned home Sunday afternoon when they took on Kent State - Tuscarawas. The double header ended in a 2-0 victory for Beaver.
The first inning showed both teams scoreless. Beaver jumped on the board in the bottom of the second. Jessica Hughes started the inning with a lead off home run, her first of the season. Four batters later, Brittany Garza grounded out, but earned the RBI as Brenna Cepull scored after doubling in her at-bat.
Holding on to their 2-0 lead, Beaver tacked on an additional 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Kayla Cambell 2 RBI single. In the top of the fifth, Kent St. scored their first run of the game, but Beaver quickly answered in the bottom of the inning with 3 runs, to increase their lead to 7-1.
Despite a seventh inning push from Kent St., where they scored 2 additional runs, the Lady Lions held on to win by a final score of 7-3.
Behind Vanessa Jackson on the mound, who threw a complete 7 inning game, earning the victory, the offense was lead by Hughes, who went 3 for 4. She was followed by Cambell, who was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Torey Cassidy, who was 2 for 2.
In the second game, Beaver bats were hot, as they put up a staggering 8 runs in the bottom of the second. In that at-bat, Beaver batted through their lineup, as 4 of the 13 batters had hits, and 4 batters were walked. After being scoreless in the third, Beaver tacked on 2 additional runs in the bottom of the inning, including an RBI from Katie Valiga, to score Carley Schroeder, who doubled in her at-bat.
The Lady Lions held Kent St. scoreless and went on to win through the mercy rule, with a final score of 10-0. In the circle for the Lady Lions was Hughes, who threw all five innings, giving up just 2 hits and earning her first win of the season.
The team is now 5-7 in their overall season. They will head on the road Tuesday afternoon when they take on Grove City.
