Woodland Hills, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver softball team took to the road for a doubleheader against Penn State Greater Allegheny. The team comes into this weekend matchup looking very solid all around this season, even as they struggled at time to get their bats going at times. With a win today, Beaver will strengthen their standings in the PSUAC playoff hunt as they aim to be one of the top seeds once again this season.
In game one on the day, Beaver had a rough time dealing with Greater Allegheny. The team started out slow offensivley, not scoring a run through their first four innings of play. While the team did eventually out-hit Greater Allegheny 9-6, they were unable to hold runners on against Greater Allegheny as passed balls and errors hurt Beaver. After letting up an early lead to Greater Allegheny, Beaver would be unable to come back in this game as their struggles were too much to overcome as they would lose 6-2.
In game two, Beaver would finally get their game together as they jumped out to an early lead in this one. By the fourth inning, Beaver would hold a 5-0 lead over Greater Alleghney thanks in part to Sophomore Vanessa Jackson, with 2 hits for 3 RBIs in the firrst four innings. Beaver would let up 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving Greater Allegheny a little room to come back late in the game. However, that wouldn't happen as Sophomore Brittany Zahn would help lead the charge for Beaver in the fifth inning as they would tack on 4 more runs. In the end, Beaver would end up taking the win in this game by a final score of 11-4.
After spliting their doubleheader with Greater Allegheny, Beaver now sits at 16-13 overall with a 14-4 in conference record. The team was led today by the efforts of Brittany Zahn, who in the second game went 4-4 with 5 RBIs in the second game. The team will take the field next on Sunday, April 23, as they will travel to take on Penn State Fayette. Game time is set for 2 pm.
