Monaca, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver softball team hosted the women of Penn State Fayette for a weekend doubleheader on Saturday. Both teams have played well in conference play so far this year as these games looked to be tough for both sides coming in.
Game one was a low scoring affair, as both sides played hard from begining to end. In both teams came out strong in the first inning, eaching scoring one off of some good hits. In the second inning Beaver was able to shut Fayette down as they tacked on another run thanks to an RBI double by Sophomore Dina Cable (Mannington, NJ / Salem County Vo Tech). Beaver was able to hold on to their 2-1 lead for the rest of the game, as Sophomore Vanessa Jackson (Snohomish, WA / Snohomish) pitched a great 7 innings, allowing 7 hits while striking out 4 throughout. In the end Beaver took home a win in the first game of the day by a score of 2-1.
Game two of the day was a much tougher fight for Beaver, as they were held scoreless in a 4-0 loss. Freshmen Torey Cassidy (Hinsdale, NY / Portville) started this game for Beaver as they came out to a rocky start in the first two innings. In the top of the first inning, Beaver allowed 2 runs on 3 hits to go down 2-0 early to Fayette. After being held scoreless in the bottom of the first inning, Beaver gave up another to Fayette to start of the second inning as they fell behind even further. For the rest of the game Beaver struggled to find their bats, as they couldn't manage to string together anything against a good pitching Fayette team. In the end Fayette would tack on another run to take home a win in the second game by a final score of 4-0.
After splitting games with Fayette, Beaver now sits at 9-10 overall on the year while taking home their first conference loss to fall to 9-1 in conference play. Beaver was led in their effirts today by the performance of Dina Cable, who had 2 hits on the day with 1 clutch RBI single to give Beaver the win in game one. The team will play next on Sunday, April 8, as they will travel to Penn State Fayette. Game one is set to start at 2 p.m.
