Monaca, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver softball team hosted their first home games this season against the girls from Penn State DuBois.
Beaver comes back to their home field still winless after their spring trip to Myrtle Beach this season, where the team played well bu just couldn't figure out a way to bring a win home. Finally back at their home field, the team comes into their first home game ready to get that elusive first win.
Game one of the doublehead was completely dominated by Beaver, as both their hitting and pitching were in full swing from the start. In the first two innings the game was slow for both sides, as Beaver only scored one run to kick off the game in the top of the first. It was in the top of the third when Beaver started to crack the score open, scoring two runs before adding on four in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. The stars of the first game were Lacey Weible, who went four for four with 2 RBIs, and Vanessa Jackson, who pitched four scoreless innings while letting up only three hits. Beaver took home the win in this game by a final score of 10-0, winning in only five innings.
Game two of the doubleheader went just as the first did with DuBois having a little more luck with their bats throughout. Beaver started out the game hot, scoring nine runs in the first two innings to jump out to a big 9-0 lead. It wasn't until the fourth inning when these teams would score again, as both Beaver and DuBois put up two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. The team would win this game in five innings as well by a final score of 14-5. It would be Beaver's pitching and defense that would shine in this game, as Torrey Cassidy and Vanessa Jackson would combine to let up only eight hits throughout their five innings pitched. The offensive star of this game would be Brenna Cepull, who went three for four with 2 RBIs.
After sweeping DuBois in their doubleheader, Beaver now sits at 2-7 overall with a 2-0 in conference record. The team looked great in their home opener, outscoring DuBois 24-5. The team will play next on Saturday, March 25, at home against Penn State DuBois again. Game one of the doubleheader will start at 2 p.m.
