The Penn State Beaver softball team looked to continue its winning streak today as they faced off against Chatham University. Beaver's girls come into this one looking to keep their bats hot after beating CCBC two days before, outscoring them 45-2 in just two games. With their confidence up they will be looking forward to a tough game against Chatham University.
The first game started at 3 p.m., and it was a battle right from the start. Chatham jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning after they were able to string together a few good hits. The Beaver girls didn't answer back quickly, but in the third inning they were able to answer back in a big way. The Beaver bats came to life and the girls rallied to score five runs in the third inning, taking back the lead. Chatham shows some signs of life in the fourth inning as they answered back with a solo home run to lead off the inning. However, from there on out it was all Penn State Beaver as Vanessa Jackson (Snohomish, WA / Snohomish) pitched a great game, going six innings while striking out six batter and letting up only two earned runs. The Beaver girls tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning, and ended up coming away with the 7-2 victory as the Chatham girls went down silently in the seventh.
The second of the two games started at 5 p.m. as the Beaver girls looked to come away with the clean sweep of Chatham University. Unlike the first game, both teams came out with a lot of energy, as Chatham scored two in the top half of the first and Beaver tacked on one of their own. The real story of this game was Sarah Foose (New Bloomfield, PA / West Perry) as she pitched an amazing game, letting up only the two unearned runs in the first inning before shutting down Chatham's offense for the rest of the game. However, Beaver was also silent until the fourth inning when they were able to have a small rally, scoring three runs and taking the lead that would last them to the end of the game. When it was all said and done, Penn State Beaver walked away with their second win of the day, beating Chatham by a score of 4-2.
It was a good day overall for the Beaver softball team, as they had both outstanding pitching preformances by Vansessa Jackson and Sarah Foose and great hitting preformaces to back them up. The big star at the plate for Beaver today was Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA / Shenango) who went 3-3 with two triples and an RBI in the second game. The Penn State Beaver softball team now sits at 6-12 overall on the season, as their next game will be Friday, March 25th at home agsint Southern State Community College. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 3 p.m.
