By Evan Pinchot:
The Penn State Beaver softball team traveled to Grove City College today for a double-header against the girls of Grove City College. This will be the beaver girls first games after returning back home from their spring training trip to Vero Beach, Florida. They head into these games looking to start off their season right with a win.
The first game started at 3 and the Beaver girls had a rough start to the game. The girls let up two runs in the first inning and Grove City clung to that lead for the rest of the game. The girls showed a little bit of life in the fourth inning but were never able to get anything rolling. In the final inning their bats looked as if they were coming to life but were unable to score any more runs and ended up losing the game 2-1, finishing with only three hits and making three errors throughout the game.
The second game was scheduled to start at 4:30 and the girls were eager to take one of the two games on this road trip. This time around their bats finally warmed up as they had 7 hits in the game, including two hits from both Asia Borders (Ellwood City, Pa/ Ellwood) and Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA/ Shenango). However, the girls let up four runs to Grove City in the fourth inning and were palying catch up til the end. As the girls were able to muster up one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth it didn't matter as the Grove City girls were able to tack on one more run in the last inning, putting the game just out of reach for Beaver as they fell by a score of 5-3. The story of this game for Beaver was their inability to drive in runners as they ended up stranding 7 runners on base that could have helped to bring home a win for them.
Even though they could not secure their first win of the season today, both Asia Borders, with 2 hits and an RBI, and Jenna Petrucci, with 3 hits and an RBI, looked strong in these games. The Beaver girls now sit at 0-12 overall on the year and will look to get their first win of the year this Saturday as they travel to St. Vincent College for a double header. The first game this Saturday is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
