The Lady Lions pick up their first win of the season!
Beaver beats Rivier 8-7
Myrtle Beach, SC --- The Lady Lions Softball team picked up their first win of the season today as they took on Rivier College at 11:30 this morning.
Rivier opened the game by scoring right away in the first inning, but Beaver answered as Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley, PA/Penns Valey) singled and stole second and was able to get into scoring position on a single by Korie Krull (Pittsburgh, PA/Langley). Bowersox was then able to score by stealing home to tie the game at 1 at the end of the first inning.
A double by Rachel Borrell (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) in the second inning helped keep the momentum going, despite runless inning. In the third, Rivier picked up another run but Beaver answered in a big way. Bowersox again led the inning off with another single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Krull and stole third to get into scoring position once more. Lauren Pier (NewBrighton, PA/New Brighton) singled to score Bowersox, and advanced to second with her first steal of the game. With Pier on second, Korey Freyermuth (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry) was hit by a pitch to put her on first. Sydney Brinton (Pittsburgh, PA/Brashear) advanced the runners with a ground out and then Borrell walked to load the bases. Freshman, Rachel Charlier (Burgettstown, PA/Burgettstown) hit her first double of her college career to score 3 runs and give Beaver 4 runs scored in the inning.
In the fourth inning, Rivier added two runs in an attept to even the score, but Beaver answered with a run of their own that inning to keep the lead at 6-4.
Both teams scored two in the 6th inning with Beaver's runs coming from a Bowersox single, and sacrifice hits by Krull and Pier. With empty bases, the lone senior Korey Freyermuth hit her first homerun of the year to help Beaver keep their lead.
Rivier tried to battle back in the 7th inning, but Beaver's defense held them to one run and gave the team their first win of the season.
Beaver will play again tomorrow, March 5th, at 9:30 a.m. against Malone College.
