The Beaver Men's team kicked off their 2018 on the road, as they defeated Kent State-Tuscarawas in an impressive 85-84 overtime win.
As the first half started, Beaver went into action, staying far enough ahead of their opponent. Senior Eric Gallupe led the team with a few 3-point jump shots that helped to bridge the team from their opponents. Senior DJ Austin and sophomore Clevon Scott also each made a 3-pointer, helping to push the team in the lead. Freshman Andrew Brady led the team in layups during the first hald, as Tuscarawas attempted to push ahead. Tuscarawas could not push past Beaver, however, as the half ended with Beaver leading 38-29.
In the second half, however, things changed a bit, as Tuscarawas struck back with just enough bravado to make a close game. On Beaver's end, Austin led the team in 3-pointers during the half, while Brady and sophomore Tavarski Wardlow made some important layups. Tuscarawas crawled back with just enough layups to tie the game at 74 at the end of the second.
As OT started, Beaver knew that, by using efficient teamwork, they could top their opponent. The team used OT to their advantage, sticking with simple but consistent layups to push ahead of Tuscarawas on the scoreboard. Throughout OT, the score remained close, but a 3-pointer from Gallupe ultimately pushed the team to a 85-84 win.
With their first game of 2018, the men's team is now 4-9 overall. They will return to the court Tuesday for their first home game of 2018 as they take on the Univ. of Maine at Fort Kent.
