The Penn State Beaver basketball team started their 2016-2017 season with a home matchup against Kent State Tuscarawas. Beaver came into this game looking to prove that they are still a force in the PSUAC after a disappointing 2015-2016 season. The team lost a lot of key talent from last season but has made of up for it with their very impressive Freshman class. This young team really needed a big win going into this one to prove that they can compete coming into this season.
The first half of this game was a hard fought battle between the two teams. Neither side really had an edge for the first ten minutes as mistakes on both sides really kept this one at a slower pace. As the half went on Beaver started to pull themselves together, and with their fresh legs coming off the bench Beaver was able to really make a run in the last 10 minutes of play. With 6 minutes left to play in the first half the score was tied at 20, but with the help of Freshman Clevon Scott and his 8 points in the last 6 minutes Beaver went into the half with a score of 42-25.
Beaver came into the second half with a big lead and a lot of momentum that they looked to carry with them. The team was firing on all cylinders in this half, making big plays on both offense and defense. The team's success didn't just come from the starters in the second half, as their lead came from the great play off their bench. As the half went on it seemed as if Beaver hadn't lost a step at all while it was clear that Kent State began tiring out. Toward the end of the game Kent's players began to run into foul trouble which really held them back as Beaver went on to win this one by a score of 92-45.
Beaver won their season opener by a score of 92-45, proving that their young starters can really carry this team. With a lot of depth coming off of the bench, Beaver really played well in the second half of this game as they seemed to just out play a tired Kent State team. The Beaver team was lead in this game by Dimetres Moore, who had a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 7 steals. Beaver will return to action on Monday, November 14 against Pitt-Titusville. Game time is set for 7 pm.
