Evan Pinchot - The Penn State Beaver baseball team took to the road for a Friday night doubleheader against Penn State DuBois, coming home empty handed at the end of both games.
Game one of Beaver's doubleheader was a quick one, as DuBois rallied for 9 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The second and third innings were quiet for both teams, as Beaver was unable to string together any sort of offense to catch up to what seemed like an insurmountable lead by DuBois. However, it would be the bottom of the fourth inning that would be the final straw on the back of this game, as DuBois would once again rally on offense, scoring 7 runs this time to extend their lead to 16-0. With a last ditch effort in the top of the fifth inning, Beaver was able to push across 3 runs before the end of the game, as they would end game one by taking home another loss by a final score of 16-3.
Game two was a much better game for Beaver, as this would be a duel between two defenses in this game. Just like in game one, the bottom of the first would see DuBois taking an early lead, this time by pushing across 2 runs instead of 9. From this point on, DuBois' offesne would be carried by extra-base hits and smart baserunning, as they would tack on another run in the second inning, and their final run of the game in the fourth. Despite actually out-hitting DuBois in this game 5 hits to 4, Beaver struggled to push a run across until the fourth inning, when Senior Justyn Franconca (New Brighton, Pa / New Brighton High School) hit a solo home run that would be Beaver's only run in this game. In the end, Beaver would once again walk away without a win, losing in game two by a final score of 4-1.
While neither of the night's games had gone the way Beaver had wanted to, Sophomore Parker Walden (Simi Vally, Ca / Oak Park) was Beaver's biggest contributor on offense as he was able to knock in 2 of Beaver's 4 runs between the two games. Beaver's record now stands at 3-9 overall with a 1-9 conference record. Beaver will return to action on Saturday April 10, for another doubleheader against Penn State DuBois at New Brighton High School. Game one is set to start at 2 pm with game two set to begin at 4 pm.
