Beaver Splits With Mont Alto on the Road
Beaver loses game 1, 3-5 then bounces back to win game 2, 5-3.
Mont Alto, PA -- Beaver splits with PSUAC foe, Mont Alto dropping game one, 3-5, then rebounding to win game two, 5-3.
After playing on the road yesterday, Beaver returned to action again today this time traveling to Mont Alto for a PSUAC double header. In game one, Mont Alto got on the board first, scoring two runs in the second inning. In the top of the fourth Beaver finally found an answer as Matt Capo (Moon Township, PA / Moon) and Shawn Shaner (Adrian, PA / Kittanning) scoring Stephen Antolic (Freedom, PA / Ambridge) and Nick Casasanta (Moon Twp, PA / Moon) who both reached safely with singles of their own earlier in the inning. Despite this hit streak, Beaver was still down one run after their at bat. In the bottom of the inning, Mont Alto answered with two runs of their own to regain their 3-run lead (5-2) after four innings of play. Both teams played stingy defense allowed for just three total hits between both teams until the seventh inning. In the top of the inning, in their final at bat of the game, Beaver's Tyler Thellman (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) hit a one out single. He was followed by Antolic who doubled to score Thellman. Seeming to have some momentum, Beaver looked to make a late push to challenge Mont Alto, but the next two batters were not able to string together hits as the Lions fell by a final score of 3-5.
On the mound for Beaver was Jake Debo (New Brighton, PA / New Brighton) who threw six innings giving up 10 hits and four runs, striking out two. Antolic led the way offensively going 3-4 with 1 RBI followed by Capo who was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Game two got off to a quicker start as both team tallied a run in the first inning followed by a 2 run Mont Alto second. With a small deficit, Beaver rallied back in the third. This time it was Casasanta and Derek Bozic (Beaver Falls, PA / Beaver Falls) with the RBI singles to regain the lead, 3-2. Again in the fourth, Beaver attacked the Mont Alto picthing as four of the seven batters out the ball in play. A single by Duncan Miklos (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) followed by a Thellman double set the stage for Antolic who hit an eventual game winning 2RBI single. With a 5-3 lead after the fourth, Beaver was able to hold Mont Alto to just two hits for the remainder of the game to claim the victory.
On mound was Dan Vanderslice (Sharon, PA / Sharon) who threw a complete game givng up just six hits and three earned runs while striking out four.
The Lions return to action Saturday, April 16th when they host Penn State Schuylkill in more PSUAC double header action.
