Butler, PA – Penn State Beaver falls to rival Penn State Greater Allegheny in both games of their PSUAC double-header at Pullman Park.
Going into game one, both teams knew this would be one of their biggest battles of the season and it was Greater Allegheny who got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two. Beaver was held scoreless as Greater Allegheny increased their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. In their last at bat, in the top of the seventh inning, Beaver was able to get themselves on the board after senior, Grant Scott (Sewickley, PA/Ann Arbor Pioneer) tripled followed by Derek Bozic (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) who earned the RBI despite being thrown out on the play. Unfortunately, the spark by Scott late in the game was not enough to start a late rally and Beaver fell by a final score of 6-1.
On the mound for Beaver was Matt Sweikowski (Zelienople, PA/Seneca Valley) who threw five innings followed by Stephen Galmarini (New Castle, PA/Union) who came in to throw the final inning.
In game two Beaver seemed to refocus at they came out swinging, scoring a run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Matt Rose (Beaver, PA/Beaver) that scored Austin Logan (Beaver, PA/Beaver) who tripled in his at bat. They continued to roll in the top of the second putting three more runs on the board as the pitching and defense of Greater Allegheny waivered as they walked three, had a fielding error and allowed a runner to advance on a passed ball. In the bottom of the third inning, Greater Allegheny would pull it together and tie the game at 4-4 and then take the lead in the fourth inning (5-4). For the remainder of the game, both teams would play flawless defense as neither team made an error and Beaver only gave up one more hit, but they were unable to surge late in the game to overcome an undefeated Greater Allegheny team.
Leading the offense for Beaver were Tyler Thellman (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk), Rose, Logan and Scott who each had a hit in the game with 3 of the 4 also earning RBI's.
On the mound was Tyler Schuster (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) who threw the complete game giving up 5 runs on 7 hits.
The pair of losses drops Beaver to 9-7 in the PSUAC as they prepare for their final weekend of conference play. They will travel to both Penn State Worthington Scranton and Penn State Hazleton for back to back double headers on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
