Green Tree, PA - The Penn State Beaver baseball team bats went cold on Sunday when the team dropped a doubleheader against NAIA opponent, the Point Park University Pioneers (Pittsburgh, PA).
In the first game, Alex Filippi (Center High School/Monaca, PA) led off the first inning with a single and later scored on a Marcus Allen (Union High School/New Castle, PA) fielder's choice to give Beaver an early 1-0 lead.
After that it was the Pioneers' game. Point Park scored a run in the first inning to tie at 1-1, then scored three runs over the next two innings. The Pioneers blew the game open in the fifth inning as they tacked on four more runs for a final score of 8-1.
On the day, starting pitcher Zach Davis (Hampton High School, Allison Park, PA) pitched six innings, allowed ten hits, six earned runs while striking out one, and walking six Pioneers batters. Freshman Garrett Covalt (Hopewell High School/Aliquippa, PA) led the offensive attack, going 2-2. Beaver gathered five hits and also left five runners on base in the loss.
In the second game, the Pioneers jumped on the Nittany Lions early and often as Point Park batters amassed twelve runs on nine hits in four innings. Freshman Tyler Schuster pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on five hits while walking six Pioneer batters.
The lone bright spot offensively was Alex Filippi who went 2-3 during the game, including driving in Beaver's only run in the 12-1 defeat.
