Butler, PA - The Penn State Beaver Baseball dropped two games to PSUAC leader, Penn State Greater Allegheny (McKeesport, PA), at Pullman Park in Butler, PA.
In game one, Beaver gained momentum in the 1st inning as Garrett Covalt (Hopewell/Aliquippa, PA) hit a solo homer to give Beaver a 1-0 lead. Beaver then scored four runs on four hits as they upped thier lead to 5-0 in the 3rd inning. Cory Wagner (Center/Monaca, PA), Tom Lewis (Hopewell/Aliquippa, PA), Jim Musgrave (Ambridge/Ambridge, PA) and Andy DiPietrantonio (Beaver/Beaver, PA) each had singles in the inning.
Despite the deficit, Greater Allegheny began to chip away at the lead as they scored one run in the 5th inning and another run in the 6th. Down 5-2 heading into their last at-bat, Greater Allegheny plated three runners as Mike Visloski (West Allegheny/McDonald, PA) hit a 2-RBI triple to make the score 5-4. Visloski later scored to tie the game at 5-5.
Beaver looked to take control in extra innings, as Covalt reached on a leadoff walk and scored on a Zack DelTurco (Monaca/Monaca, PA) double. Up 6-5, Beaver retired two of the first three batters, but were defeated on a walk-off two run homer by Sam Weightman (Penn Trafford/Harrison City, PA), making the final 7-6 (9 innings) in favor of Greater Allegheny.
In game two, Greater Allegheny pitching stymied the Beaver bats. Beaver mustered just one hit, a 5th inning double by Wagner, and only three baserunners reached base. Greater Allegheny managed three runs on nine hits to give them the 3-0 victory and solidify their first place position in the PSUAC.
In the losses, Beaver falls to 10-15-1 on the season and 10-5-1 in PSUAC play. They now sit in 3rd place in the PSUAC trailing Penn State Greater Allegheny and Penn State Brandywine in the standings.
Beaver next faces Penn College at home at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 23rd, 2011, in their final regular season game of the season. Students are reminded that there is a T-shirt giveaway for those who attend. Supplies are limited.
