Nittany Lions Give Hilfinger First Career Win Over Warriors
Cocoa Beach, FL - On Tuesday, March 9, the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions baseball team earned their first win of the season by upending their USCAA foe, the Rochester College Warriors (Rochester Hills, MI), 4-3. The game marked the first win for Jack Hilfinger, the Lions' new head baseball coach.
Senior Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School, Sewickley, PA), the 2009 PSUAC Player and Pitcher of the Year, showed why he's the conference's toughest pitcher as he went all seven innings striking out thirteen Warriors batters and allowing only four hits in the process.
Frederick helped himself at the plate when he drove in a run along with Ronnie Wilkins (South Side High School, Hookstown, PA) and Tom Lewis (Hopewell High School, Aliquippa, PA).
With the game tied at 1-1, Beaver rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 4-1, but the Warriors made things interesting in the top of the seventh when they scored twice and threatened to tie the game. However, Frederick sealed the win by striking out the game's final batter.
The Nittany Lions resume play today at 1:00 p.m. when they take on the Warriors for a second game.
