Beaver Takes Two From West Division Leader, Greater Allegheny
On Sunday, Oct. 7 the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions baseball team returned to its winning ways when the men took two games from West Division leader Penn State Greater Allegheny.
In game one freshman Jake Ellis (Seneca Valley High School) pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and walking three, while striking out four. Sophomore Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School) pitched 2/3 of an inning to record his second save of the season while, offensively, freshman Ben Sladick (Western Beaver High School) led the way with a triple and two hits. Senior Pat Ringel (Sto-Rox High School) added two hits in the victory as well. Greater Allegheny took a 1-0 advantage when they scored a run in the bottom of the fourth. Beaver answered with two in the top of the fifth, but Greater Allegheny responded with two in the bottom of the fifth. Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning, Ringel led off with a single and stole second before senior Ian Thomson (Hopewell High School) drove him home with a single. Sladick singled to score Thomson and, with freshman Matt Khoso on to run for Sladick, sophomore Ryan Raraigh (Riverside High School) doubled in the final run.
In game two, Beaver fell behind, 4-0, before scoring two in the third and two in the fifth to tie it, 4-4. Greater Allegheny scored one in the sixth and was one out away from the victory when Beaver came alive. With two outs in their final at bat, Thomson singled and Frederick followed with a monster home run to dead center to take the lead permanently. Frederick finished the game with two hits, freshman Reed Schwertz (Freedom High School) had two hits, and Thomson recorded three hits in the victory.
Beaver now stands at 14-6 overall and 9-3 in the PSUAC. The men finish their fall season on Saturday, Oct. 13 when they host Penn College at 1 p.m.
