Monaca, PA -- Lady Lions Split Games in Doubleheader
By: Chris Rotondo
The Lady Lions faced off this afternoon in two high stake matches, including a PSUAC conference match.
The first match was a conference match against Penn State New Kensington. The first set started with Beaver dominating their opponent 8-0 in the opening minutes, with sophomore Brooke Tomasco serving. This forced New Kensington to take a timeout, after which the team slowly began to rebound. Beaver took the first set 25-15. In set 2, New Kensington began to show some initiative, keeping Beaver's offense on their feet. Beaver won the set 25-18, with 10 kills and 31 takeaways.
Set 3 showed Beaver's defense struggling to retain the ball, despite 3 kills and 7 attempts from sophomore Brooke Tomasco. New Kensington won the set 21-25. In set 4, Beaver came back in what was a close round. Near the end of the set, the team was down 21-23, but they quickly came back, winning the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
The second match faced the Lady Lions against CCBC. The first set created the tone for the game as Beaver struggled to defend itself against the rival team. The team had an impressive 12 kills and 46 takeaways, but that was not enough against CCBC, winning the set 25-18. Set 2 also had Beaver falling to CCBC 25-18, with 25 takeaways.
Set 3, however, showed the Lions bouncing back defensively, with the team landing 15 kills and 37 takeaways. Beaver won the set 25-14. However, that brief jump of momentum was not enough, as CCBC won the 4th set 25-16, also winning the match 3-1.
The Lady Lions will face off at Penn State Greater Allegheny tomorrow at 2:00 p.m., in another PSUAC conference match.
