McKeesport, PA -- Lady Lions go 2-0 on the day, defeating Lehigh Valley and Hazleton, 3-0.
Saturday afternoon the Lady Lions traveled to Greater Allegheny for their first taste of the teams out east. In their first match of the day they faced Lehigh Valley. The first set set the tempo for the match as Beaver came out swinging, totaling 10 kills in the first set. Their consistent serving combined with their high powered offense was too much for Lehigh Valley and Beaver went on the win the set 25-9. The second and third sets were very similar as Beaver won easily by scores of 25-3 and 25-6.
Leading the offense was Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA/Shenango) who had 9 kills in the match. She was followed by Mackenzie Keller (Freedom, PA/Freedom) who had 8 kills. Beaver was also tough from the service line as freshman, Jordan Militello (Industry, PA/Western Beaver) led the way with 9 aces. She was followed by freshman, Sarah Crooks (Goldsboro, NC / Wayne County Day School) who added 7 and Ryanne Kie (Laguna, NM / Laguna Acoma) who had 6 of her own.
Hazleton was their second opponent of the day and they saw the same fate as Lehigh Valley. Beaver again came out swinging hard and serving well with 11 kills in the first set. They would take the set by a final score of 25-13. Now that they were warm, they stepped up their offense in the second set, committing no errors on offense and cruised to a 25-6 victory in the set. In the third set they continued to stay aggressive at the net and from the service line and went on to win the third and final set by a score of 25-7.
In this match it was Petrucci again leading the way with 11 kills, giving her 20 on the day. From the service line, Beaver was led by freshman, Hadiya Hall (Victorville, CA / Eisenhower) and freshman, Haley Engelman (Monaca, PA / Central Valley) who both contributed 4 aces. Standout freshman setter, Brenda Martinez (El Centro, CA / Southwest) dished out 51 assists this afternoon while also contributing 2 aces and 3 digs.
Beaver now sits at 7-1 in the conference and will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they square off against Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Penn State Scranton in a quad match starting at 12:00p.m.
