Monaca, PA -- Beaver splits in day one of action in the PSUAC/WPCC Challenge.
Hosting for the second weekend in a row, Beaver opened their Friday evening hot against WCCC. The Lady Lions got off to a sluggish start against WCCC winning the first set by only 6 points (25-19). In the second set they quickly got to work and held Westmoreland to just 7 points, winning 25-7. In the third and final set, Beaver again went to work right away. With some new players coming in off the bench the Lions were able to cruise to a 25-14 vitory to take the match in three sets.
Leading the offense were sophomores, Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA / Shenango) and Ryanne "Roxy" Kie (Laguna, NM / Laguna Acoma) with 4 kills each. Brenda Martinez (El Centro, CA / Southwest), the freshman setter, added 4 aces from the service line as did Petrucci in the Lady Lion Victory.
In their second match of the evening Beaver faced a touch opponent in Butler Community College. Beaver took the first set in convincing fashion, winning 25-15, but BCCC picked up their game in the second set as they stole it 25-16. Going into the third set tied, Beaver got down early, but rallied to get back into the game. Inside of 20 points, both teams battled, but Butler was too much for Beaver as they fell 25-21. In the fourth and final set, despite looking like the Lady Lions were going to make the late push to send the match into the fifth set, they couldn't quite gain the late lead and fell by a heartbreaking score of 26-24, falling 3-1.
Beaver was again led by Petrucci with 15 kills, followed by freshman, Morgan Cannister (Aliquippa, PA/Hopewell) who tallied 12 of her own.
Beaver will return to action tomorrow at 1:00 pm when they face Penn Highlands.
