Monaca, PA -- Lady Lions Volleyball picks up their first two wins of the 2014 season.
Tonight, in the first round of the PSUAC/WPCC Challenge, Penn State Beaver faced WCCC in the first game of the night. In the first set Beaver capitalized on WCCC's slow start and won easily 25-12. Natalie Gamble (McKees Rocks, PA/Sto-Rox) contributed 2 kills while freshman, Mackenzie Keller (Conway, PA/Freedom) added 2 aces. In the second set WCCC came alive, but Beaver was able to take the set 25-20 again lead by Keller with 3 aces. In the third and final set of the match Beaver's Gamble found her stride on offense and added 5 kills to her 8 total in the match. With the momemtum on their side the Lady Lions took the set by a final score of 25-23 to win 3-0.
Offensively, Gamble lead the way with her 8 kills followed by Ryanne "Roxy" Kie (Laguna, NM/Laguna Acoma) with 3. From the service line it was the freshman duo of Julianna Kon (Hopewell, PA/Hopewell) and Keller leading the way. Keller with 8 aces and Kon with 3.
In their second match of the night Beaver faced county rival CCBC. In the first set Beaver started slow, but quickly found their stride and won the set 25-14. In the second set the Lady Lions were hot from the service line scoring 8 of their 25 points on aces. Kon contributing 5 while junior, Miranda Pfeiffer (Freedom, PA/Freedom) added 3. In the third and final set Beaver went to work on offense just as they did against WCCC with Kie leading the way with 3 kills.
In the match Gamble lead in kills with 6 followed by Kie with 5. From the service line it was Kon again leading the way with 7 aces in the match followed by Pfeiffer with 5 and sophomore, Birttany Davids (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) with 3.
Beaver takes the court in day two of action in the PSUAC/WPCC Challenge for a 1:00 p.m. start when they will face Penn Highlands.
