Beaver drops home opener to Bethany College
The Lady Lions fall by a score of 3-1
Monaca, PA – Women's Volleyball played their home opener tonight against the Lady Bisons of Bethany College.
In the first set Beaver played extremely well, but could not get the ball to fall for points often enough as they dropped the first set by a score of 25-13. In the second set, the mental toughness of the Lady Lions was challenged as Bethany's offense worked very quickly and efficiently. Beaver was only able to score nine points in the set, despite a good defensive effort. Too many service errors took the Lady Lions out of the game. The momentum shifted dramatically in the third set as Beaver found themselves down 6 points at 12-6, but they battled their way back into the game to get it tied at 12-12 and then managed to hang on to a one to two point lead for the rest of the match and took the set 25-23 in an exciting finish. In the final set of the match, Beaver could not maintain their momentum and the experience and outstanding play of Bethany proved to be too much as Beaver fell 25-11.
Despite the loss, Coach Bertges and Coach Fontes were pleased with the way their team played. Outstanding offensive efforts by juniors, Natalie Gamble (Mckees Rocks, PA/Sto-Rox) and Kayona Ward (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) kept the spirits of their teammates high. The pair also blocked well in the middle. Other impact players included freshmen, Madeline Hill (Monaca, PA/Central Valley) and Brittany Davids (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) as well as libero Miranda Pfeiffer (Freedom, PA/Freedom).
Beaver now has a season record of 2-8 and plays their next match on the road against Pitt Greensburg on Thursday, September 5th at 7PM.
