Fayette Takes Season Series Against Beaver
Lady Lions fall to PSU Fayette
Monaca, PA- Penn State Beavers Womens Volleyball team (11-12, 10-6 PSUAC) played their last home game of the season against their tough PSUAC rival Penn State Fayette. Fayette took the win and series for the season 3-1 (25-15, 28-26, 22-25, 25-12).
In the first set, Fayette came out strong with a 5-0 start. Beaver soon turned on the fire by eventually taking the score 10-6. However, Fayette would win the set 25-15. Jenn Fannin (Harbor Creek/Erie, PA) kept the Lady Lions in the set with excellent play.
The best set of the morning was in the second. Beaver Started out down 5-1, but excellent blocking by Rachel Grubbs (Freeport/Sarver, PA) and Kayona Ward (Beaver Falls/Beaver Falls, PA) brought the Lady Lions to tie the game at 13. There were three ties, and four lead changes before Beaver would lose the second set 28-26.
In the third set, Beaver carried over their strong play winning 25-21. Their strong defense slowed down Fayette and would take them into the fourth set down 2-1. Natalie Gamble (Sto-Rox/McKees Rocks, PA), Grubbs, Fannin, and Ella Epps (Penn Hills/Pittsburgh, PA) really brought Beaver back into the game.
Upset from the previous set, Fayette came out strong in the fourth set. Beaver would face being down 6-0 before scoring. But the fast paced Fayette would not let the Lady Lions get back into the game and would win the set 25-12 and the set.
For the morning, Beaver was led by Grubbs with 9 kills, Fannin with 6, Gamble and Ward with 5 each, and Epps with 4. Fannin had 38 digs, followed by Grubbs (34), Gina Richman (Union/Edinburg, PA) (22), Amanda Palombo (Quigley/Aliquippa, PA) (17), Epps (18), and Ward (10). Grubbs had 3 blocks, Gamble with 2, and Palombo with 1. Richman had 2 aces, Grubbs with 3, and Gamble/Fannin/Epps with 1 a piece. Grubbs also contributed 14 assists.
Beaver will play in the PSUAC playoffs beginning on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. Their opponent is yet to be announced.
