Beaver Finishes Third in USCAA Tournament
The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions volleyball team opened their 2008 season by placing third in the four-team USCAA Tournament at Penn State New Kensington on Friday, Aug. 29 and Saturday, Aug. 30. The women had one win and two losses.
In game one, the Lady Lions fell to Ohio State Marion's Scarlet Wave, 8-25, 19-25, and 16-25, putting Beaver in the loser's bracket for a match-up with New Ken. In game two, Beaver made quick work of New Ken with three wins, 25-13, 25-10, and 25-15. The victories advanced Beaver to the semi-finals for a rematch with the Scarlet Wave.
Beaver won the first game, 25-21, but fell in game two, 21-25. In game three, the Lady Lions took a 2-1 game lead with a 26-24 win, but Marion won game four, 25-20, taking both teams to game five where Marion won, 15-12. Beaver finished third in the tournament.
Beaver junior Melissa Swoager (South Side High School, Hookstown, PA) recorded 19 kills, and sophomore Heather Sandusky (New Brighton High School, New Brighton, PA) led the team with 25 kills. Junior Jen Hain (Northgate High School, Pittsburgh, PA) led with 54 assists.
The Beaver Lady Lions are 1-2 overall and 0-0 in the PSUAC. On Friday, Sept. 5 and Saturday, Sept. 6 Beaver will travel to La Roche College, Pittsburgh, for the La Roche Invitational. On Friday the team takes on La Roche at 3:30 p.m.
