BEAVER FALLS, Pa.—The Penn State Beaver women's soccer team beat PSUAC rival Penn State Schuylkill in Saturday's nail-bitter conference match, 3-2.
Beaver came out aggressive as freshman Veronica Andujar (Weston/American Heritage Boca/Delray) made her way to the box a launched the ball straight into the net, earning the Lady Lions an early goal at the 1:24 minute-mark. At the 16th minute, a Beaver foul allowed Schuylkill to score on a penalty kick and tie the match (1-1). But Andujar answered back four minutes later with a second Beaver goal (2-1). With less than 10 minutes before halftime, Beaver built the lead to 3-1 thanks to an unassisted goal by sophomore Stephanie Sosa-Bravo (New York/Grand St. Campus).
In the second period, the teams played excellent defense and didn't allow any goals until the 77th minute, where Schuylkill scored and closed the gap to one goal, putting pressure on its lead Beaver to hold the visitors from tying in the final minutes of the game. However, the defense thwarted Schuylkill's final scoring opportunities and took a 3-2 conference win for the day.
Andujar led the way for Beaver, scoring two goals on 11 shots and eight on goal, followed by Sosa-Bravo, who finished with one goal on five shots and two on goal.
At the net, freshman Megan Bartley (Austintown/Austintown Fitch) had 15 saves against the 17 SOG she faced.
After today's win, Beaver improves to a 3-4 overall record and 2-2 in the PSUAC conference standings. The Lady Lions will be back on Monday, Oct. 7, where they will host conference rival Penn State Mont Alto. Game time is at 2 p.m.
