North East, Pa. – In the last game of the regular season, the Penn State Beaver women's soccer team traveled to North East, Pa., to face off against Mercyhurst Northeastern University on Tuesday. The ladies are on a two-game winning streak as the team gets ready to enter the postseason. Beaver aims to keep the hot streak going and capture a third-straight win today against Mercyhurst NE.
In the first period, Beaver replicated that same fervor that the team has displayed early in the last few games, dominating 70% of the play. Beaver looked smoothed and focused, easily maintaining ball possession during the first period., which led to Beaver's Katie Valiga knocking down the first goal of the game and putting Beaver on the board (1-0) to end the first half. Despite the wind chill picking up in the second half of the game, Beaver's defense played solidly and kept Mercyhurst NE at bay, not allowing the opponents to land on the board. As the second went on, Valiga scored off a penalty kick and sealed the win away for Beaver (2-0).
After Tuesday victory, Beaver ends the regular season on a high note, extending the team's hot streak to three straight games and locking down third place in the PSUAC standing with a 4-2 record and finish 7-5 overall for the regular season. The ladies will go head to head against conference rival Penn State Hazelton in the PSUAC Semi-Finals this Saturday, Oct. 27. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
