Mont Alto, Pa. -- The Penn State Beaver women's soccer team were on the road Wednesday evening, where they played against Penn State Mont Alto in the team's first of three games for the week. The Lady Lions struggled in their first three games of the season, succumbing to three losses on the road. But the season is now on the upswing for Beaver, as the ladies earned their first win (5-0) in their last game against Villa Maria and look to extend their win-record against Penn State Mont Alto.
In the first half of the game, Beaver looked completely against Mont Alto, and the team had several 10-minute stretches of ball possession. Freshman Marissa King launched a brilliant shot from just outside the 18-yard box, scoring the team's first goal. Beaver ended the period 1-0.
During the second period, thanks to a collective effort from the Beaver ladies by building back the play all the way to the front line, freshman Abby Miller finished the play by striking the ball from just inside the 18-yard line, putting the Lady Lions up two goals against Mont Alto. As the second period proceded, Beaver had a lapse in play and allowed Mont Alto to score a goal on a four-on-one breakaway. As the clock wound down on the game, the game appeared as it may slip away to Mont Alto, who earned a penalty kick against Beaver late in the game. But thanks to a well-needed save by goalie Brittany Zahn, Beaver held on and won the game 2-1.
As a result of developing and getting strong in its system of play, the women's soccer team has won back-to-back games and has improved to 2-3 overall record. Beaver will play at home Sat. 22, against Penn State Brandywine. The game starts at 2 p.m.
