Rochester, PA- Penn State Beaver women's soccer win their first match of the program's history against Penn State Greater Allegheny.
Going into the game both teams knew this would be an emotional as they were both battling for their first win of the season. Greater Allegheny opened up the scoringl at the 15:24 mark but that didn't stop Beaver from pushing to the net. Beaver was able to get 7 shots on goal in the half and scored off the foot of Ana Paula Garcia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Santo Antonio) at the 28:45 mark to tie up the game at 1-1, which was the score going into halftime.
The game changing goal came in the second half when Jessica Spina (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) scored at the 76:58 mark giving Beaver the 2-1 lead. Spina was assisted by Miranda Robson (Rochester, PA/Rochester). For the remainder of the game the momentum favored Beaver and at the 87:16 mark Kiersten Manor (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) was able to get another goal, making the final score 3-1, Beaver. Goalie Amanda Donatelli (Indiana, PA/Indiana) was also a key player who helped keep the lead by stopping 7 shots on goal throughout the match.
Not only is this win the first for the program but it is the first win with the new roster additions and with new head coach, Shaun Schetka. Perhaps the new blood has rejuvenated the team and will garner future wins.
Beaver's next game is on Wednesday, October 9th at 4 p.m. against West Moreland Community College, hopefully this win has ended the losing streak for good.
