Beaver rolls past Schuylkill
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. –– The Penn State Beaver women's basketball team nabbed its second of this weekend's back-to-back PSUAC conference victories against Penn State Schuylkill Saturday afternoon, 73-56.
Junior guard Diamond Thomas (Pittsburgh/Carlynton) lead the team with 19 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists, followed by senior forward/center Cheyenne Lopez (Roswell/Goddard) with 14 points, six rebounds, one assist and one block. Sophomore guard Alexis Cross (Columbiana) also added on 14 points, four assists, one steal and one block.
The Lady Lions had the best quarterly performance in the first, outscoring Schuylkill 21 to 9, 9 points of which came from Lopez, who went 4-5 from the field and 1-2 from the charity stripe. Beaver had another dominant quarter in the second, with Cross leading the charge with 8 points to help the Lady Lions tally on another 24 points while holding Schuylkill to 15 to take a 45-24 lead at halftime.
The Lady Lions stayed in control of the tempo of the game, adding on 23 points in the third, 10 of which were delivered by Thomas, who went 4-8 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe, which propelled Beaver ahead by 33 heading into the final stanza (68-33). While Schuylkill managed to outscore Beaver 21-5 in the fourth, the home team wasn't able to overcome the large deficit, giving Beaver a 73-56 win for the day.
Box Score Highlights: Beaver shot 36.6 percent from the field, connecting on 26-71 shots, 28.6 percent from 3-point range on 4-14 shots and 56.7 percent from the free-throw line, hitting 17-30 from the charity stripe.
Beaver is now 15-3 overall and remains undefeated in the PSUAC conference (12-0). The Lady Lions will be back on the road to take on the University of Akron-Wayne College on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
