Beaver Struggles Against Apprentice
Monaca, PA -- Beaver Struggles Against Apprentice
By: Chris Rotondo
The Beaver women's basketball team returned home Tuesday for their first home game of 2018. They took on The Apprentice School, who defeated Beaver 85-56.
As the game started, both teams tried to prove their dominance over the other. Senior Roxy Kie made the first shot of the night with a layup, but Apprentice was quick to push themselves into the lead. Halfway through the first period, the team was down by 4, but junior Ally Rudolph was quick to make a 3-point jump shot that tied the game at 9. Apprentice was able to resume their lead, leaving Beaver trailing 25-20 at the end of the first.
The second period showed that Beaver's opponent meant business as they built up their lead even further. Rudolph continued to impress, making two 3-pointers in the period. Freshman Diamond Thomas also helped to bring her team some much needed points. Ultimately, Apprentice showed a smoother form of play, outshooting Beaver. The half left Beaver trailing 50-32.
In the third period, Beaver attempted to make their comeback, playing an agressive defense. Senior Brittany Jackson led the period in layups, while sophomore Cheyenne Lopez also helped to provide points for her team. Despite their attempts, Beaver still had a long way to go at the end of the period, trailing 63-47.
In the final period, it was Apprentice who proved that they had control of the game, outshooting Beaver once again and building their wide lead. Jackson once again led the team in shots, though it was apparent in the final minutes that the entire team had trouble controlling the ball. Despite a last second jump shot from freshman Libby Thomas, Beaver fell to their opponent with a final score of 85-56.
Beaver is now 5-9 in their overall season. They will head out on the road this weekend for a pair of conference matchups, starting with a Friday night game against Penn State Brandywine.
