York, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions took to the road for a very important conference matchup against Penn State York. Beaver comes into this game with a 7-2 conference record, needing a win to help secure a top 4 finish in conference play. The team has been off of their game during their last four games, losing each by a double digit margin, and they will be looking to get things back on track with a win over York.
The game started off slow for Beaver, as the girls were in a battle from the begining. York seemd to match up well against Beaver as the teams went back and forth with the lead for the first 7 minutes of play. With 3 minutes left in the first quarter, York went on a 7-1 run and took a 24-16 lead going into the second. The second quarter showed a much better Beaver team, as they fought back hard to bring York's lead to within 2 points at one point. But that still wasn't enough for the lady lions as they were still down 39-33 to a good York team going into the half.
Beaver came out in the second half looking like a different team, as they were able to shut York down and take back the lead within the first few minutes of play. Beaver played well both offensively and defensively in this quarter, outscoring York 21-10 to take a 54-49 lead going into the final quarter of play. In the fourth, both teams played hard to take control of the game. Beaver was able to carry over their good play from the third as York stepped up their game to make this a close battle for a crucial game. In the end, Beaver was able to fend off York as they held on to a 5 point lead to win the game 69-64.
With their win over York, the team now holds a 12-7 overall record while improving to 8-2 in conference play. The team is currently sitting in a good position as they are within striking distance to take one of the top 2 spots in the PSUAC standings, securing themselves a first round bye. The team was led in this game by Senior Mason Depetro (Pittsburgh, PA / Cornell) who scored 14 points while hauling in 8 rebound, tallying 4 assists and getting 5 steals in the team's victory. The team will play next on Saturday, January 28, at Penn State Mont Alto. Game time is set for 1 pm.
