The Penn State Beaver women's basketball team took on the ladies of Villa Maria, winning by a final score of 69-54.
Beaver came into their game against Villa Maria as the number 14 ranked team nationally in the USCAA. Beaver had been playing well up to their break, and with this being their first game back they hoped to shake the rust off fast in order to keep improving on an already impressive record.
The first half of this game was very close, as both teams seemed a little slow from the start. Neither team had trouble scoring during the first quarter of play, and at the end of the first quarter the score was 18-17 in favor of Villa Maria. The second quarter was a much harder played quarter, as both teams seemed fully loose and ready to jump out to a lead at a moment's notice. However, with a more physical quarter came mistakes and that kept this game close as Beaver only managed to gain a five point lead before the half. With the momentum really on neither teams side, the score going into halftime was 28-33.
The second half of play was much more one sided, as Beaver slowly started to build up their lead. In the third quarter Villa Maria put up a tough fight as they played very good defense, however they just couldn't seem to shoot like they had in the first half of play. Beaver was also slowed down by a lot of fouls called against them and were even hurt by some missed calls as well. By the middle of the fourth quarter Beaver had built up a comfortable 15 point lead for themselves as they eventually would cruise to their third victory in a row.
With their win over Villa Maria, Beaver now sits at 9-3 overall while remaining unbeaten at 5-0 in conference play. The team did a good job of getting back into the swing of things after the long holiday break and looked very good in their victory. The team was lead in their winning effort by Senior Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) who had a team high in both points, with 21, and rebounds, with 16. The team will play next on Friday, January 13, at Penn State Worthington Scranton. Game time is set for 6 pm.
