Monaca, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver lady lions took on the women of Penn State Fayette, winning by a final score of 75-69.
The Penn State women's basketball team host Penn State Fayette for their fifth conference match this season. The Beaver girls come into this game fesh off of a crushing loss to Davis and Elkins, in which they lost by a wide margin to end the team's five game win streak. Beaver will be looking to regroup tonight against a much more beatable team in Penn State Fayette.
The game was a much closer match than many expected, as the first two quarters did not prove which team was really in control of this game. Fayette started this game off by taking a small lead, and up until half time neither team would be able to hold a steady lead over the other. Both teams were playng well offensively, but it was Beaver's sloppy defense in the first half of play that allowed Fayette to hang with them. As Beaver came out in the second half down 35-36, the team started to fire on all cylinders and play a very sound game against a good opponent in Fayette. Beaver took control of the game, and the lead, in the third quarter and were able to keep control of the game's momentum all the way to the finish, winning by a final score of 75-69.
The Beaver girls now sit with a 7-3 overall record, while remaining unbeaten in PSUAC play with a record of 5-0. The team has done a tremendous job buckling down in the second half of game, helping them to win a lot of games so far this season. Beaver was lead in this game by the efforts of Sophomore Mia Mattes (Bethel Park, PA / Bethel Park), who scored a team high 16 points while tallying 5 rebounds and 3 assists. The team will play next on Saturday, December 17, against Westminster College. Game time is set for 1 pm.
