Beaver loses tight game with Brandywine
Lady Lions fall, 77-73.
Beaver falls to Brandywine in a championship rematch from last season.
Beaver got behind early in the game, facing a nine point deficit only seven minutes into the game (17-8). Brandywine continued to put the pressure on Beaver as they grew their lead to 14 at the 10:19 mark in the first half. But over the next two minutes, Morgan Kurtz (Washington, PA/Trinity) and Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA/Lincoln) would provide the Lady Lions with the spark they needed to get back into the game. Kurtz would be the initial spark, hitting a jumper follwed by a free throw to make the score 25-14. Borders then followed hitting a jumper of her own followed by two free throws to make the score 25-18 and they didn't stop there. Asia and Morgan would both hit jumpers to bring the game within four points (26-22) at the 8:00 minute mark. Senior, Kalynn Hill (Pittsburgh, PA / Montour) would tie the game at 29 with just over four minutes to play in the half. The Lady Lions would go into half time down just one (34-33).
In the second half, Beaver again struggled to keep the game close as they found themselves down 10 (55-45) just under halfway through the second half. It was again Kurtz who provided the spark, hitting a 3-pointer which was the beginning of an 11-0 run for Beaver that would eventually tie the game at 56 with 9:03 to play. Unfortunately, that would be as close as Beaver would come to stealing the lead from Brandywine as they fell by a final score of 77-73, despite a late pushin the last minute of the game.
The Lady Lions were led in scoring by Kurtz who put up 32 points, follwed by Borders who added 21 of her own. Beaver outshot Brandywine 45% to 39%, but allowed too many points off of turnovers (20) as well as giving up 11 second chance points.
Beaver, who now sits at 7-2 in the PSUAC, will return to action on Sunday, January 25th when they take on Penn State Schuylkill at 2:00 p.m.
