Women Drop Home Opener
Lady Lions fall to Apprentice, 81-72.
Monaca, PA -- Lady Lions drop home opener in day one of the Tip-Off Tournament to The Apprentice School.
In the opening minutes of the game, the Lions jumped out to a commanding 13-5 lead at 14:52 off of an Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) jump shot. By the 11:43 mark Apprentice tied the game at 17. Over the next seven and a half minutes the momentum would shift in favor of Apprentice as they took a 16 point lead (36-20) with just three minutes left in the half. Beaver, clearly winded, pushed hard to finish the half down 20 (44-24).
To open the second half, the Lady Lions came out on a 9-0 run to make the score 46-33 at 16:23 off of another Asia Borders jumper. Beaver, with a new fire in the second half, would battle back to narrow the score to 9 with just 2:53 to play on a bucket from Sydnee Abernathy (Pittsburgh, PA / Allderdice), but it wasn't enough to gain the advantage on a very disciplined Apprentice squad. Beaver would fall by a final score of 81-72.
Leading the Lady Lions was Cassandra Flowers (Pittsburgh, PA / Westinghouse) with 16 points and 23 rebounds. Flowers was followed in scoring by Morgan Kurtz (Washington, PA / Trinity) and Brittany Mineard (Beaver Falls, PA / Beaver Falls) who added 14 and 13 respectively.
Beaver will face Penn State DuBois at 1:00 p.m. in day two of action in the Tip-Off Tournament.
