Lady Lions Win First Game of 2013-14 Campaign
Lady Lions down Thiel College 88-73
Monaca, PA- The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions defeated Thiel College 88-73, winning their first game of the 2013-14 season (1-3). This was a huge victory for Beaver, defeating a Thiel team that defeated Penn State Behrend in their last contest.
Thiel took control of the game early, building a 20-8 lead by the 10 minute mark. Thiel added to the lead by the 8 minute mark, leading 31-12 (19) before Beaver would wake up. Sophomore Khalia Adams (Washington DC/Phelps) owned the final minutes of the second half, leading Beaver on 15-4 run to close out the half, and pulling Beaver within four at half (38-34).
Beaver kept their momentum going in the second half, going back and forth with the Tomcats. With 13 minutes left in the game, Beaver took their first lead, 47-46, on freshman Mason DePetro (Coraopolis, PA/Cornell) free throws. The flood gates then opened on the Tomcats, as Beaver attacked the hoop, scoring at will, and out scoring Thiel 41-27 the rest of the way to win the game 88-73
Beaver outrebounded Thiel 47-30 for the game. Freshman Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA/Ellwood) recorded her first collegiate double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds and scoring 18 points. Adams led all scorers with 23 points. DePetro, Junior Natalie Gamble (McKees Rocks, PA/Sto-Rox), and Sophomore Morgan Kurtz (Washington, PA/Trinity) all scored in double digits (14,12, 10 respectively).
With the win, Beaver now sits at 1-3 overall. The Lady Lions return to action Saturday, November 23rd, when they travel to Bethany, West Virginia. Beaver returns home Tuesday, November 26th when they host cross county rivals Geneva College. Tip off is set for 6PM.
