Beaver falls to SUNY Canton after a tough game
Beaver loses, 71-69
Monaca, PA- Penn State Beaver Lady Lions suffered a tough loss against the SUNY Canton Kangaroos during the Penn State Beaver Tip Off Tournament.
In their second consecutive day of play, the Lady Lions faced the Roos of SUNY Canton in the consolation game of the Tip-Off Tournament. After jumping out to a commanding 22-7 lead at the 14:28 mark, Beaver looked to be in control of the game early. Over the next ten minutes of play, SUNY found their rhythmn and managed to get back into the game scoring often to tie the score at 30 with only 3:24 left in the first half. Beaver, feeling the pressue, opened up their scoring to expand their lead to 39-32 going into half time. Leading the scoring in the first half was Morgan Kurtz (Washington, PA/Trinity) who put up 13. Beaver also rebounded well in the half with Cassandra Flowers (Pittsburgh, PA/Westinghouse) at 5 and Natalie Gamble (McKees Rocks, PA/Sto-Rox) and Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA/Ellwood) each grabbing 4.
To start the second half, the Lady Lions held their lead until the 12:37 mark when the Kangaroos tied the game at 51 after two free throws. Over the next 10 minutes both teams battled with the lead changing hands a total of 6 times. With a little over two minutes to play, Beaver battled hard but never regained the lead and fell by a final score of 71-69.
It was again Kurtz leading the way in the second half as she finished with 27 points and 4 steals on the day. Also leading the scoring effort was Brittany Mineard (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) who added 13 points and 3 steals.
The Lady Lions take the court again on Thursday, November 21st as they face Thiel College at 6PM to try to capture their first win of the season.
