Monaca, PA - The softball team had a nonconference matchup with Grove City College on Wednesday, April 19. They seemed to be asleep in the first game, making uncharacteristic erros that ultimately cost them the game. Game one ended in the 5th inning with a final socre of 12-4. However, they responded in the second game by notching a close victory of 7-6 to split on the day.
Game one was never a close contest and a very uphill battle all day for Beaver. Giving up 6 runs in the 1st inning and 12 overall with only 8 of them being earned runs due to 4 errors plaugued Beaver the whole game. There were few brightspots in game one, however Senior, Cassadie Speed, (Cranbury, NJ), hit a solo homerun while also going 2/3 at the plate and scoring twice. Sophomore, Elena Denezza, (New Brighton, PA), went 2/2 at the plate with 2 RBIS, a stolen base while Junior, Kylie Magnotta, (Monaca, PA), went 2/3 with an RBI and a run scored but it wasn't enough as Beaver dropped the first game in 5 innings.
Game two was a much closer matchup as Beaver took control early in the game. They had a 4 run lead at one point which gruadually dwindled down to one run in the top of the 7th with the tying run on third base. Sophomore pitcher, Bre Thomas, (Ambridge, PA), went 7 strong innings while on giving up 2 earned runs helping close out the victory for Beaver. Junior Kylie Magnotta and Senior, Valentina Sandoval, (Miami, FL), each had a hit, a steal and 2 RBI's as Beaver pulled out a close 7-6 victory. It is worth noting that depsite the victory, Beaver committed 11 errors between both games. They are going to look to improve upon that as playoffs are fastly approaching.
Beaver now has an overall record of 20-11 and a PUSAC record of 9-5. Their next appearance is Friday, April 21 at Penn State Mont Alto. First pitch times are at 2pm and 4pm.
