Evan Pinchot - The Penn State Beaver softball team hosted the women of Penn State New Kensington for a doubleheader matchup on Beaver's senior day, sweeping their visitors to end the 2021 regular season.
Before the start of game one, Beaver celebrated their two seniors, Lacey Weible (Hookstown, Pa South Side Beaver) and Natalie Larkin (Center, Pa / Central Valley), and their incredible careers playing at Penn State Beaver.
Game one was a close matchup between these two teams, as Beaver would come out slow for the first three innings. It wouldn't be until the fourth inning when the real battle would heat up between Beaver and New Kensington, as Beaver would catch fire at the plate, pushing across 2 runs in the fourth, 3 runs in the sixth, and 3 runs in the seventh inning. With a great relief appearance on the mound from Senior Natalie Larkin, Beaver was able to take back an early lead from New Kensington and hold it, winning game one of the day by a final score of 9-7.
Game two was another game decided by hot streaks from both teams, as both teams would struggle for large portions of this one. The first 3 innings were all owned by Beaver, as they would build up a 6-1 lead by the team this game reached the fourth inning. From here the game would be quiet offensively, as neither team would scroe until the top of the seventh. Carrying over her great pitching performance from game one, Natalie Larkin would pitch all 7 innings in this one as well, allowing only 3 runs on 5 hits. Thanks to the performance by Larkin on the mound, they wouldn't need any more runs than the 6 they pushed across in the first 3 innings, as they would go on to win this game by a final score of 6-3.
After sweeping New Kensington on their senior day, Beaver now holds a 14-8 record, both overall and in conference play. The lady lions will return to action on Monday, as they will take to the road, travelling to take on the women of Penn State Fayette. This matchup will be a doubleheader, with game one to start at 2 pm, with game two set to start at 4 pm.
